[Music] Hi sharks, I’m Sahar, founder of Bamboo, and today I’m asking for 800,000 dirhams in exchange for 5% in my business. Bamboo is a brand of tissues made entirely from bamboo. I’m a mom of two and when my youngest was born, I had the pressing need to make some changes at home and make sure that our footprint was lowered. And one of the products that we all use every day is our tissues. Yet, I didn’t know how it was made. So, I got curious about it and I started reading and the more I read about it, the more I was convinced that treefree tissues were the way to go. 15% of global deforestation is due to tissue manufacturing and toilet paper alone is the single largest contributor to deforestation. Knowing that I knew that I wanted to buy a tree-free tissue. So I went to the nearest supermarket to my house. I went to a tissue aisle and guess what? All I found were rows and rows of tissues packed in plastic made from trees. And when I failed to find one, I figured it was on me to launch the UAE’s first tree and plastic free tissue brand. Meet Bamboo. Last year we did 433,000 dirhams. Um, right now we are at 84,000 dirhams a month. We feel that we’ve conquered e-commerce to a large extent in the past 2 years, but we’re betting on retail. So, Sharks, who’s with me to roll into a greener and brighter future? Well, Sarah, congratulations. I think uh it’s a noble cause what you’re doing. Thank you. Tell us about yourself. What kind of you know background do you have? I’m a marketeteer by education and career. Very quickly I got into the world of media. I joined a startup after that 10 years prior to starting Bamboo. I worked with FMCG and cosmetics clients. But as I became a parent, I wanted something um a bit more meaningful to me and something that I would be proud to continue to share with my kids. But in the US there are tons of brands that are doing this already. Can you help me understand the difference between doing it here versus doing it there? So in the UAE currently there’s I would say 99% of the tissue industry is pre-made tissues. I would have liked it as a consumer prior to launching Bamboo that a big brand that makes that decision to say you know what we are also going to offer a um sustainable alternative alongside what people are used to but that’s not something that’s currently available. So when you surveyed the marketplace, you said, “I know those brands are in other parts of the world. They’re just not here and there’s room for for one to be here.” Correct. Yes. What’s your price comparison compared to other competitors that are not sustainable? So if you compare us with the more premium ranges of u the big brands that we’re all used to, per sheet, we’re the same price. We don’t compete with the value and um budget brands today. And I think because we use a premium raw material, we don’t use plastic packaging and that already those two things. What’s the premium? Um, it can be about 2 to 3x. So you’d want consumers to pay twice as much for sustainability. Correct. Okay. Do you have the ability to have for example less layers and then have a product for the mass market? Absolutely. So there’s a lot that we can play with to um create ranges that speaks to everyone. Um, we can play with the quality. We can play even with the packaging. Who else is u in this company besides you? It’s it’s just me. So, Sah, can you tell me a little bit more about your margins? Uh, so right now we have 40% margins. We’ve been able to negotiate and we’re working towards 50%. And where do you produce? We produce in China. So, we use Chinese bamboo and we manufacture very close to to farm. So give me what in your mind the next 3 years revenue and growth by next year we can be looking at uh 10 million dirhams currently. Are you making any money? Currently we are um negative. Negative how much? 67,000 dirhams over closing closing last year. We will be profitable by October this year. Do you have a sense of what the velocity needs to be in this category in order to sustain yourself at retail? we need to be doing three or four times what we do today. I think you’re a product that sits very well in the online space. In the offline space, it’s going to be very tough. And you also have to buy your shelf presence, which is going to be very costly. Which brings me back to the 800,000 you’re asking for. What is that going to do for you? Um, opening a channel could cost somewhere around 50 to 200,000 dirhams. If I want to do three of these, that will still allow me a budget to invest in trade marketing and my sampling. I don’t think as a startup we’re expected to be everywhere. You remain niche. Tesla started niche. So sir, I really like you. I think that you’re great, but for me, I think the lack of barrier to entry into this market and the fact that the tissue market is so huge that it would be very easy for one of the big brands to be able to undercut you. For those reasons, I’m out, but I wish you the best and I think it’s a great cause and it’s very aesthetically pleasing. Thank you, Sah. Uh, I think you’re on the right track. I know the expertise that you come with and it’s it means a lot. It’s just you know having raised this business like a baby um it’s it’s difficult to give up 30%. Is there a way to get closer to 10%.
